I cannot stress enough how cruel our government is AND has been to immigrants. Immigrant children have NEVER been off-limits for the US. During 1960s, in an attempt to overthrow the newly established communist regime in Cuba, the CIA infiltrated a popular Cuban radio station, “Radio Swan”, and convinced the population that Castro was going to take their children and send them to work camps in the Soviet Union. Sadly, many Cubans believed the rumors to be true and the unaccompanied minors were brought to the United States in an effort led by the Archdiocese of Miami, it was the largest exodus of unaccompanied minors in the history of the western world. This horrific event was known as Operation Peter Pan and most of those children were never reunited with their parents. The documents regarding Operation Peter Pan have yet to be released and the result was an entire generation of Cuban-American children being raised to be right-wing followers kept in the dark about their own history. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the abuses executed by our own government, this will continue to happen unless Americans actively demand an end to the institutional separation of children from their families.
